Blepharoplasty / Eyelid Surgery
Blepharoplasty is a cosmetic procedure that removes excess tissue around the eyelids. Also known as eyelid surgery, this procedure is very common and often combined with a facelift or browlift.
Men and women who undergo blepharoplasty are typically over the age of 35. They exhibit problems such as:
- Droopy or baggy eyelids
- Excess eyelid skin (dermatochalasis)
The skin around the eyelids is prone to stretching over time. Fat also has a tendency to accumulate below the eyelids. Both of these conditions can make a person look tired or unhappy. Fortunately, blepharoplasty can improve these conditions and significantly improve your appearance.
The Surgery: How Blepharoplasty is Performed
Eyelid surgery requires approximately 1 to 3 hours of operating time. After a thorough medical evaluation and vision test, the procedure can be performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia. Precise incisions are made in the natural eyelid creases or inside the lower eyelid. Dr. Leff separates the skin from the underlying tissue, removing or repositioning excess skin, muscle and fat to improve the appearance of the eyelids. Fine sutures are then placed to close the incisions.
After Blepharoplasty Surgery
Recovery time is approximately 10 days after blepharoplasty. After surgery, Dr. Leff will lubricate your eyes and apply a bandage. You may feel some tightness in the eyes as the anesthesia wears off. The doctor will instruct you on keeping your head elevated and using medications to control discomfort.
